Cheese Quest 1
Jan. 10th, 2026 04:23 pm
Before New Year's, E and I went to the HEB at Lincoln Heights which is fancier than a regular HEB, but not as fancy as Central Market. I was looking at cheeses while E was in the bakery and the cheesemonger gave me a coupon for 20% off any of their cheeses in that section. So I went with one I knew I'd like and two that were experiments.
The one I thought was a sure bet was the Chimichurri Gouda because I love gouda. I was hoping it would be a bit spicy, but despite tasting of pepper and chilies it was more earthy than spicy. It was also sharper than I expected, but it was good.
My favorite was the white cheddar dill which was a surprise. I love dill, but I'm not a fan of cheddar at all. It's generally way too sharp for me. This one was very herbal and salty and just delicious.
My least favorite, and the one I wouldn't have bought if I hadn't had a coupon, was the smoked cheddar. I took a chance on it because I do like smoked gouda and smokiness in general. However, this was very hard, almost crumbly, and it was way too sharp for me, I'll probably take it to my parents and see if they want it, because I tried it again a couple of days after the first taste and I just don't like it. And honestly I didn't even realize cheddar came in that consistency.
The only other cheese I've put in my analog cheese journal is HEB Monterey jack with jalapeño and habanero which is something I have with my lunch every day during the week. So, obviously, extremely good!
This week we are having enchiladas, so I will be journaling about oaxaca and queso fresca, both of which are delicious. One of the best things in the world is thinly sliced pan sauteed potatoes topped with mole poblano sauce and queso fresca.

Happy Shouto Day! 🍰 (1/11)
Jan. 11th, 2026 04:36 am
The art itself

Happy birthday to Shouto! I did this super quick so it looks kinda sloppy. I really love timeskip Shouto's hair style, and more mature jawline.
I was in such a hurry because I saw 1/11 art at around 11:35 PM and was like, oh shit, I forgot all about Shouto day!! so I got to sketching reeeeal fast (amazed that I got his face shape right the first time when I kept on struggling just last week). When I was about to upload the pic, I noticed there weren't a lot of posts on his Bluesky birthday tag yet.
That's when I realized it just turned 1/11, and I'm early, not late. Anyway, happiest of birthdays to the coolest, kindest baby boy; I love him so much :"D

Are the poor dears all right?
Jan. 10th, 2026 05:11 pmOf course it would be Jonathan Jones making these overheated speculations, wouldn't it? Did Leonardo da Vinci paint a nude Mona Lisa? I may have just solved this centuries-old mystery.
We do wish he would go and look at some landscapes, or maybe abstracts, for a change, though doubtless he would find some female sexual symbolism to perve over there.
Cannot help feeling that he is just some point on a spectrum away from this very weird - not sure if it entirely constitutes a subculture? The Goon Squad: Loneliness, porn’s next frontier, and the dream of endless masturbation Very NSFW and rather creepy - the author in an interview cops to Perverse Exhilaration which may have something to do with discomfort at the tone as well as the actual matter?
There was a piece in Guardian Saturday about people who fall in love with their AI companions, and want to marry then and have children with them, and apparently some women also bond with them, but so far this is not online that I can find. Based on a book that's coming out?
A wonderful find: Slaby ancestry information!
Jan. 10th, 2026 10:19 amThere are also some very old obituaries and cards from the funerals in the envelope. some relatives who died in the 1930's. Some are somewhat faded but overall they are in good shape. The cards don't give a ton of information besides when they died but I've been able to see some of that information from the family decent report. My dad even wrote out some more notes on the Slaby side starting with his grandfather George Slaby who was born October 19th, 1899 and his wife Anna Matuska (my dad's grandmother) who was born June 2n, 1904.
I've been wanting to see these notes for years and have been asking my dad for years but he could never find them. About a year or two ago my dad accused me of having them and wanting them back - but I had no idea they even existed. I'm sure he' happy to see them now being read and looked into. My mom gave me these papers so now I can go on and try to do some research and learn more. I'd like to try to learn more about their jobs, where they lived in those areas (mostly the Cleveland area here in Ohio) and hobbies. Wish me luck - I'll start doing this more seriously in a few weeks I think.
Recent reads from the end of 2025 and onto the new year 2026 ~
Jan. 10th, 2026 09:04 am'Dying: A Memoir' By Cory Taylor
This book I picked up because it reminder me of my mother and her condition and conversations we've been having in recent months. It was good overall but at times I felt like I lost connection. I made some notes from the book as I read it in the late summer after my nephew Alex passed away.
'My sisters keeper' By Jodi Picoult
I've always been a big fan of this author and this book was no exception. I had a hard time putting it down and the ending completely surprised me. I own several of her books and plan on reading more as time goes on.
'Jo's Boys' By Louisa May Alcott
While reading this book was the period in my life that I lost my father so to be honest I remember opening pages and reading the words but it was difficult to keep concertation and track of what was happening. In the future someday I plan on rereading the three books in order - Little women, Little men & Jos boys so I can make better sense of the characters in the later two books.
'Learning to live with OCD and anxiety: Separating myths and facts' By Katie Mercer
I think I read this book in a few days - it was pretty short and I skimmed over some of it. After reading it the parts of OCD don't seem to match with how I feel and do things but I could relate to some of the anxiety parts.
'GriefShare Survival guide: Navigating the holidays after loss' By The church initiative
While this book was given to me with good intentions I had a difficult time getting into it because of the religious background. I'm sure these books are very useful for those who have those beliefs but for myself I just couldn't get into it. I think I may rehome it to a free little library.
'And every morning the way home gets longer and longer' By Fredrik Backman
This one is about a father and a grandfather who is communicating with his son and grandson. Sometimes it goes into the man's head and he's talking to his wife who has passed on. It's a somewhat deep and sad story, short but meaningful.
'A celebration of animation: The 100 greatest cartoon characters in television history' By Martin Gitlin & Joseph Wos
In some ways I liked this book and in other ways it felt too long. The title says 100 but there are clearly more than 100 characters they touch base on and talk about. Some of the characters I enjoyed learning more about and others I never heard of. I ended up giving this book to my boyfriend because he ejnoys watching cartoons more than I do.
'It's okay that you're not okay: Meeting grief and loss in a culture that doesn't understand' By Megan Devine
I enjoyed this grief book more since it felt like it got straight to the point. The author lost her husband to a drowning accident suddenly. She write about the raw and heartbreaking experience of it and the aftermath and how society really can be clueless to those going through loss. At times the book was so sad it made me cry I had to put it down but it did help me overall.
'Cairn Terriers: Everything about purchase, care, nutrition, grooming, behavior and training' By Patricia Lehman
Because of taking in Fynn - my father's dear dog - was the reason I got this book. It was a good read, short and informative. I've never owned a dog that was a full bread, only mutts - so it was interesting to learn about this breed I knew little about. The pictures throughout were adorable.
'Sunrise on the reaping' Susan Collins
Of course I recently wrote about this book - Just a week or two ago. It was a good book but I don't think I liked it as much as I liked the other hunger game books I've read. It was bittersweet to learn more about the lore of the world and characters tied in together. I'm curious is there will be more HG books coming out - if there are I hope they cover other districts. I feel like we've spent enough time in 12, it would be neat to learn about the others.
'Klondikes, chipped ham & skyscraper cones: The story of Isaly' By Brian Butko
One of my dad's favorite ice creams were klondikes. While at my friend Jenny's home I noticed this book and they let me borrow it. It was the first book of 2026 I finished. While it was a short read it was informative with lots of old adds, prices and pictures. The history of Isaly was bittersweet but I feel like a-lot of companies start off well and then go down some difficult times.
'Unfamiliar: Volume 2' By Haley Newsome
I found the first volume of this book while at my local library last year. It was a good book and I found of there was a second volume I just had to check it out. I'm glad I did. It's about some misfit characters and their little adventures and lives. I love the art. It's just a simple graphic novel to enjoy. It'll be nice to read the third one if the author is able to write up one.
'More days at the Morisaki bookshop' By Satoshi Yagisawa
This is another book I found the first one at my local library last year. I got it in an event where they wrapped up the books and you just had to pick one by the description. It's a simple, short and slice of life sort of tale about an introvert young woman who sort of finds herself while being at her uncle's bookshop in Japan. I liked the writing style, the characters and the plot. This is the second one and it carries on with the girl, her job, relationships and life. It is a bit darker than the first and deals with some emotional stuff but is still a heartwarming story to read.
[3] on kpop biases
Jan. 10th, 2026 03:54 pmnow, i mostly think it was my autistic black and white thinking. there's no universal way of choosing a bias, and what a bias truly is. i realised i can't get into people's minds, can't understand their reasoning entirely, and just accepted that a bias is whatever a person wants a bias to be. that it's also okay to change biases, have multiple. we change, our idols change. it's just fun, and it's more fun without labels.
i can confidently say my bias in stray kids is han jisung. i feel a very deep connection with his songs, the way his thinking goes, i resonate with the little glimpses of his life that he decides to show to us, whether during shows or in his bubble messages. there's certainly a language barrier in place, i feel a bit sad that i can't listen to his words directly. but honestly, sometimes it makes me love him more. to know there's a person you feel somehow connected with, across the ocean, with some struggles you relate to is a good thought. it's a bit of a balm for my rough skin, rough life.
when it comes to my other faves, my other biases, i would say i'm very appeciative of faces and expressiveness. i struggle to read subtle tone changes and body language. when someone is earnest and expressionate, it makes me feel nice, and safe, and included. i really like that about wooyoung as well. he's one expressionate guy, the tone of his voice always carries strong meaning on top of his words. i like that a lot. i also like people, who are not afraid to be vulnerable. there's some force pulling me toward them. besides the aforementioned two, yoongi, taehyung, joshua are like that for me. or maybe it's just my gaydar going off.
Snowflake Challenges 4 & 5
Jan. 10th, 2026 06:50 am
Challenge #4:
Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page: Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!
I do (semi) regular link lists, and thought about dumping one here, but then I saw this video, and wanted to talk about it.
I braced for CW-core melodrama in space and instead got a Star Trek show that actually understands Star Trek.
Context on where I am with modern TV Star Trek, the TL;DR being: "Too old and tired to deal with this shit."
I remember watching the first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard, and deciding, "I don't have the energy to be angry at Star Trek." Which was similar to how I felt about pretty much everything in January of 2020, to be fair. But the feeling specific to Star Trek has stuck, and I haven't kept up with any of the modern shows. We did watch part of the first season of Discovery, and I enjoyed later episodes more than my first impression of the pilot (which I loathed). But then I just never cared enough to go back to it.I probably should've watched Prodigy, which was more my speed (it sounds like, being a Voyager girl growing up). Then I bounced off Lower Decks, both tonally and in animation style. And I felt the same sort of continuity exhaustion towards Strange New Worlds as I do towards all of Star Wars and most of the MCU at this point.
(For the reboot movies: Enjoyed the first one, have forgotten every single thing about the second one, adored the third one, but then Anton died, and they never made any more. Tentatively interested in whatever the reboot of the reboot will be.)
This looks like something I might enjoy! I hope it doesn't rely too much on continuity from season three of Discovery, but otherwise I like the cast, I'm willing to put up with overly-hormonal youth, and I'd just... it'd be nice not to be angry at Star Trek for a change.
A few quibbles with the video:
- Not personal to me, but if you're loving the current era of Trek... Jessie very much is not, and may harsh your mellow.
- It's probably not as spoiler free as some people use with that term, but it didn't really give away any plot details.
- I basically listened to it as a podcast, because while I very much enjoy Jessie's face, there's a lot of b-roll that's just the trailers over and over? Which I guess is a youtube thing.
But overall I liked her video! I will be tuning in to the new show.
AND THEN I SAW THIS VIDEO, so you get some Raye, too.
Challenge #5:
In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.
I'm not really active in transformative works fandom right now (brain full, no room), but here's a couple broad wishes for rainbow chasers.
1. Copying a bunch of people asking for help with
2. Tell me your favourite album last year. Not song, full album you can listen to end to end. The album doesn't have to have come out in 2025; it can be from another year, and it was just your favourite to listen to in 2025.
3. Tell me your favourite tiny detail about your blorbo, and why you like it. Don't worry if I know/like your canon. I just want to roll around in some fandom positivity. Alternately, a small joke or funny moment from your blorbo's show (or novel, or whatever).
E.g.: this is more of a canon beat, but the thing in "Mr. Rowl" where everyone keeps mistaking the heroine's dad for the Duke of Wellington cracks me up every time I think of it.
ETA: 4. If you use Discord, please go fill out this survey and tell them to put AI integration where the Sun will never see it: We're exploring how people feel about AI—tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot—and what they'd want (or not want) from AI in Discord.
ETA 2: Survey appears to be down. Not sure if it got overloaded. Or if Discord decided they don't want user input after all. Or what. Let me know if it comes back on.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.
I'm sooo happy to see a version of this challenge back! I loved fulfilling people's wishlists last year~ As for myself, I have a couple! (Don't mind the soft-recycling of my
1. Help me move! I'm currently saving up to move out of my parents' home! They forbid me from going on HRT, so I'm trying to move ASAP. Plus, I live in a red state with lots of anti-trans legislation.
My Paypal.me is here, and my Ko-fi is here!
2. Comments on my fics! I am AzureMist on AO3, and some fandoms I've written for include Dungeon Meshi, MILGRAM, Splatoon, and Pokémon, among other things! If you're familiar with any of the fandoms I've written for, from 2021 onward, I'd really, really appreciate it if you could spare some kind words!
3. Digital giftcards! Specifically Nintendo eShop, Steam, Pokémon Center and DoorDash gift cards! I have a long gaming-related wishlist, so if you could help make even a dent in that, it would be very appreciated. The Pokémon Center is the official Pokémon merch store, and Pokémon is my one true fandom, so it makes sense why I would love some items from there (especially Pokémon plushies, as I collect them)! And lastly, DoorDash cards will be used for yummy treats~
4. Support for my art accounts! A share, a kind comment, or maybe even a follow for any of my art accounts would warm my heart!! It's brutal out here for us artists online in this day and age... I am primarily active on Tumblr and Bluesky!
5. Paid time on Tumblr and Dreamwidth! I'm azuremist on Tumblr! Tumblr is my main online platform of choice, so I'd get a ton of usage out of it, and I'd love to get more icons on Dreamwidth!
6. Spare my beloved's site some kind words! This one's a secret, okay? Don't mention that I sent you! But my long-suffering husband has a simple website! It contains things like some of his art, and a work-in-progress guide to shiny hunting. Pup often gets discouraged with pups site, and hasn't updated it in a while because of it. So, please consider looking around, then signing the guestbook at the bottom of the homepage with some kind words!
7. Steam games! Steam gift cards too much of a hassle? I understand. (What kinda digital store doesn't let you send an e-gift card by email? In 2026??) Then maybe consider gifting me a game more directly with Humble Bundle! I have a lot of visual novels on my wishlist; specifics include Canvas Menagerie, Love Curse: Find Your Soulmate, Afterlove EP, Necrobarista, Heart of the Woods, and Letters From a Rainy Day -Oceans and Lace-.
8. Consider joining and posting to my Dungeon Meshi comm if you're a fan?
My email is azures.mist@protonmail.com, and my Steam account is azuremists! Much love~

Fanvid Friday: Britney Spears
Jan. 10th, 2026 01:52 amMy Comments: A little belated, I know. Okay, so this one is a bit different because it's a fanmade video for one of Britney Spears' songs, "Cinderella", edited with various music videos and footage of Britney herself as an unofficial music video. The creator of this fanmade video, which was uploaded back in the day before YouTube existed (I remember downloading it off of KaZaa), did such a great job with matching moments and even doing their best to sync up clips that made it seem like Britney was singing the song. So despite the lower quality it still holds up to this day as being among my favorite fanmade unofficial music videos done.
Also, as an aside, this is something that AI can never do. There is practice and skill to creating a piece of fanmade work like this, and nothing compares to the blood, sweat and tears of dedicated fans spending hours on a video editing software and sharing that hard work and creativity even to a handful of people.
