Experiences with social medias

At the suggestion of one of my neocities neighbours, I thought I'd partake and unpack my experiences with various social medias (some with intentions of being used for art as well) and how I felt about them. Keep in mind this is from a vibes standpoint and less of TOS or other things, some of the things I may not have direct links to and it's more of stuff I've heard, and it's more how I felt as a person on there + the community.

Being able to hold a personal and art account contributes a bit to some of it, but not a lot (it's rare for me to be very personal on my art accounts, it feels too weird for me :( ).

(This is also crossposted on my Bear Blog.)

The Hike, by Drew Magary

Ben is on a work trip, away from his wife and three young children, when he decides to take a hike through the woods by his hotel. Ben sees a man with a Rottweiler face disposing of a corpse, and flees into the woods with the dog man pursuing him.

The next thing he knows, he's trapped in a surreal world halfway between a nightmare and a video game. It often involves distorted reflections of his own past - Ben has a scar on his face from a Rottweiler bite and he keeps getting attacked by Rottweiler-faced men, an old lover appears at the age she was when he last saw her, and he befriends a talking crab that knows a suspicious amount about him. He has to stay on the path, or he'll die. A mysterious old woman gives him tasks and tells him the only way he can get home is to find the Producer. Things appear and disappear in a very dreamlike manner, the scene shifting from a cannibal giant's castle to a hovercraft to a desert. After each ordeal, he gets a banquet with champagne.

This extremely weird book is a bit like a dreamlike, horror-inflected Alice in Wonderland for bros. I almost gave up on it halfway through - it was so "one random thing after another and the whole thing is clearly not real" that I got bored - but that's when something happened that intrigued me enough to continue. It doesn't need to be as long as it is - it's a short book that would have been better as a novelette - but the ending, while not explaining all that much, still manages to be satisfying.

I wouldn't re-read this - the actual reading experience often felt like a slog - but it was definitely different and had some good twists, so I'm not sorry I read it. I suspect there's some overlap in readership between this and Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Don't read the spoilers if there's any chance you'll actually read the book.

Spoilers! )

Probably it's all a metaphor for life.

Content notes: Horror-typical gore and gross-outs.

Was not a fan of the new Shadow Milk costume at first, but it’s slowly growing on me, specifically as a potential alternate universe where Shadow Milk fell into repression.

First, there’s the outfit itself. Shadow Milk, as we know him, is obviously associated with Satan (the snake form referencing Eve and the apple, opposing Jesus/Mary figure Pure Vanilla, the tree of knowledge, etc etc). He abandoned his duties as a religious figure. So, why does his crown have a cross on it? Plus, the fact that he is now a king with a sword, as opposed to an androgynous jester with theatrical associations. He’s so much more traditionally masculine — his hair is even cut short.

Which is kind of horrific, in and of itself, right? We know that his hair is alive; would that not be akin to cutting off a limb? And he looks so tired… Shadow Milk has bags under his eyes in his usual form, of course, but it’s the eyebags in combination with the small smile, upturned eyebrows, and the scar.

We can assume that this version of Shadow Milk is some sort of soft roleswap with Eternal Sugar. Perhaps, in this universe, Shadow Milk feels he is unable to be loved unless he scrubs all of his traditionally-queer forms of self-expression away?

... What does that say about Eternal Sugar, and her relationship to gender expression?

Bedeviled Eggs (Cackleberry Club, #3)Bedeviled Eggs by Laura Childs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

View all my reviews

Shortly after midnight, I finished reading my “spare” book, Bedeviled Eggs by Laura Childs. It’s the third in her “Cackleberry Club” series of cozy mysteries. The main character is widowed Suzanne Dietz, who owns and operates the Cackleberry Club diner with her friends, Toni and Petra.

The Cackleberry Club dips into the dating scene by hosting “read dating”, which tries to match couples up based on their reading preferences. Things are going well until Chuck Peebler, mayoral candidate, is killed as soon as he steps outside the diner, with Suzanne right beside him. She takes it personally, not just because Peebler was killed on her property, but because the murderer continued firing crossbow bolts long after Peebler was down. When the sheriff shifts his attention to the woman whom Peebler argued with at the event, Petra asks Suzanne to help prove her friend is innocent. Suzanne agrees to investigate, and she thinks she’s being subtle...right up until her own life is threatened. With Halloween right around the corner, it’s time to unmask a killer.

Thoroughly enjoyable. I wish I’d read it in October. LOL! Characters are three-dimensional, the plot was well-paced, and Suzanne was depicted working and socializing—not just investigating. Her fledgling romance with Sam is progressing nicely, and I like the slow pace of their relationship. This may be my favorite book of the series so far.

Favorite lines:
♦ “Boy couldn’t find his butt crack at high noon in the hall of mirrors.”
♦ “You can give away a nameless dog, but never a dog with a cute name.”
♦ “The only date I have this Friday is with Brad Pitt. And he’s easy. I can pick him up any time at the video store.”
♦ “Welcome to my Halloween party, Harry Potter!”

Excellent book, five stars

Games: I played a bunch of Hive.

Miscellaneous: No podcasts, one longform article:
  • Why I Wrote Dirty Linen

Music: I didn't go to yesterday's pub session because Newest D&D Homebrew Campaign had a D&D session scheduled, which was cancelled at the last minute. Alas.

    Roleplaying: See above. :-/

Television: We watched the first two episodes of Max Headroom S2, which predicted AI-generated avatars of deceased loved ones and parodied certain aspects of religion in ways that ::cough:: would not make it onto TV in 2026.

I also watched the final three episodes of Heated Rivalry. Thoughts, in no particular order. )

Video Games: I finished Samorost 2, which is a mechanically simpler game than Botanicula and thus tricky to play after it, as I had to rethink the way I approached the puzzles. It's still a super fun game; I love everything Amanita Design puts out.

I wanted to play Downwell next for a change of pace, but fucking windows insists on rendering it in a tiny 3" x 4" box in the center of the screen, making it all but unplayable. I've thus settled on a Pentiment replay (in which I am once again on a collision course with the church from the get-go) and am also toying with the idea of a Darklands replay as well, given the clear debt the former owes this game...provided windows cooperates.

I think I have some friends here who speak Japanese or are learning, so I hope this is of any interest :"D

I came across a post on Bluesky that Dr. Wes Robertson's slang dictionary has been added to the New Jisho website. Dr. Wes Robertson is a content creator who frequently discusses the Japanese language, notably slang, and linguistics. I mostly see him on Tiktok but he is also on Youtube and Instagram.

It's also fascinating to note that this is New Jisho, a successor to the EN-JA-EN dictionary site, Jisho, by the same creator. New Jisho is currently in beta and was created due to several requests for the current Jisho (that's apparently 15 years old, by the way) that became hard to implement without literally just remaking the site instead. Spaghetti code, I guess?

Anyway, once New Jisho has dark mode, I might swap my current bookmark to that, instead. A shame they don't have a mobile app though; on iOS, I still use the app called "Japanese" (yes that's literally the name) to look up words but it's last update was 6 years ago. 💀

    Hi,

welcome to the weekly chat corner. Have anything SW-related to talk about? Here's your chance!

    ~ ~ ~

I've been thinking about Star Wars fanfic today, or writing thereof. I have a lot of WIPs (oh gods, so many), but I do like it when I get more than two people and a shoelace to read my fic and I realized... what do The Kids even read, these days?

So I went and looked. (On AO3, where else.)

    Quick, can you guess?

In the "Star Wars - All Media Types" tag on AO3, there are 25,988 fics with update date between 2025-01-01 and today.

    Ship categories

    1. F/M (9918)
    2. Gen (7677)
    3. M/M (6971)
    4. F/F (1791)
    5. Multi (1671)
    6. Other (932)

Oh whow. I did not expect so much F/M. Is that all Reylo?

    Fandoms

    1. Star Wars - All Media Types (17881)
    2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types (7274)
    3. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (4809)
    4. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (2835)
    5. Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Cartoon) (2302)
    6. Star Wars Original Trilogy (2019)
    7. Andor (TV) (1555)
    8. Star Wars: Rebels (1408)
    9. Star Wars Legends - All Media Types (1229)
    10. The Mandalorian (TV) (1136)

The Bad Batch surprised me here!

    Characters

    1. Obi-Wan Kenobi (6401)
    2. Anakin Skywalker (4851)
    3. Ahsoka Tano (2911)
    4. Luke Skywalker (2641)
    5. CT-7567 | Rex (2576)
    6. Leia Organa (2480)
    7. Padmé Amidala (2368)
    8. CC-2224 | Cody (2324)
    9. Rey (Star Wars) (1989)
    10. Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (1898)

I'm... surprised by how unsurprising this is? I think this is the same top 10 I'd get if I removed the time filter, which feels odd.

    Relationships

    1. Padmé Amidala/Anakin Skywalker (1568)
    2. Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (1375)
    3. Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker (1256)
    4. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker (1252)
    5. CC-2224 | Cody/Obi-Wan Kenobi (997)
    6. Anakin Skywalker & Ahsoka Tano (707)
    7. Rey/Ben Solo (558)
    8. Leia Organa/Han Solo (532)
    9. Kylo Ren/Rey (462)
    10. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Satine Kryze (367)

    And finally,

    Additional tags

    1. Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence (3208)
    2. Angst (2916)
    3. Hurt/Comfort (2741)
    4. Fluff (2421)
    5. Not Beta Read (1556)
    6. Slow Burn (1542)
    7. Alternate Universe - Modern Setting (1378)
    8. Canon-Typical Violence (1240)
    9. Emotional Hurt/Comfort (1125)
    10. Alternate Universe (1121)

    ...yeah, that tracks.

    Some details and notes

    The F/M ships

    Are this:

    1. Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (1310)
    2. Padmé Amidala/Anakin Skywalker (1151)
    3. Rey/Ben Solo (538)
    4. Kylo Ren/Rey (446)
    5. Leia Organa/Han Solo (420)
    6. Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker (377)
    7. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Satine Kryze (295)
    8. Cassian Andor/Jyn Erso (287)
    9. Anakin Skywalker & Ahsoka Tano (270)
    10. Kanan Jarrus/Hera Syndulla

...so, big on Reylo but not only, or even mostly Reylo? I wish AO3 had a way to mark main ships vs background ones, that would be so useful for this.

    Fic included

AO3 doesn't have a way to differentiate between "updated" and "first-posted", which means these numbers might be skewed by long-running WIPs. Just out of curiosity, I filtered only completed fics with one chapter (i.e. one-shots) and got 989 works in these fandoms:

    1. Star Wars - All Media Types (685)
    2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types (293)
    3. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (159)
    4. Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Cartoon) (101)
    5. Star Wars Original Trilogy (72)
    6. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (68)
    7. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (TV) (46)
    8. The Mandalorian (TV) (40)
    9. Star Wars: Rebels (38)
    10. Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order Series (Video Games) (32)

The Bad Batch higher, some Skeleton Crew, some JFO, but generally very similar. I guess we're pretty set on the Prequel era, huh.

...um. This got a bit more involved than an interesting bit of stats I wanted to entertain you with. Enjoy, I guess!
